ABOUT THE COURSE

This workshop will teach you how to make your own French mattress cushion. The skills learnt across the two days can then be transferred into making your own at home for a window sill, day bed, floor cushions, garden seat cushions or even dog bed. The sample we make in class will have a foam insert covered in wadding or the alternative of natural fibres. The cushion will measure approximately 40x40cm.

​You will start by cutting and covering the foam in wadding before cutting and machine stitching a box cover.  If using natural fibres, you will start by making the box cushion cover before stuffing with natural fibre layers.

You will then mark out and use French mattress stitches to create that lovely edging before finally making your own covered buttons or traditional tuft buttons to finish it off.

You will need to bring your own cover fabric suitable for your project - linen or linen union fabrics are ideal for this project but other fabrics can be used. Ideally upholstery weight fabric.  1 metre of fabric should be enough.

This class is designed for students with some sewing machine experience. Feel free to bring your own sewing machine if you prefer . There are 6 spaces available. 

Classes are informal and tuition will be given to guide you through your French mattress-making project.

NOTES: This workshop includes refreshments. Please bring a packed lunch.   Wear shoes that cover your toes and avoid wearing your best clothing - just in case.
